What's the purpose of an opening sequence ?
The purpose of an opening sequence is to present an narrative to the audience so they gain a type of understanding on what will feature in a film. Its the best way to ease an audience into a film to grab their attention. Some films will find that the opening sequence is really important if their film is slow paced/ slow burner where it may take a bit of time to get into the film

Captain America Civil war opening analysis
The audience are provided with more information on what the story is about and what they will see by the film tracking back in time on what happened to the two ladies with them narrating over it. As soon as we see what happened to them in before synchronous sound is added to show they the characters were feeling at that exact point in time. We are able to see that they were terrified by their slow movement and the fact the camera was moving slowly which is really effect and makes us wonder what is around them. The thudding on the door sends chills down your back showing us that the genre is horror since that is all you can hear. the camera is being hand held due to the unsteadiness of the camera. The producers are trying to make us feel like we are in the body of the characters who are really scared.

Company Idents
At the beginning of films now you will always see the 'intro' or in other words the 'ident' of the company that produced the film. This is a way promoting and branding the film that has been produced. I have looked at several dents to gain inspiration for our groups ident.
|
The visuals for the Walt Disney Pictures ident is at a very high standard of quality. I really like how they start the ident in the clouds which gradually drops to a castle with the titles then appearing. This is the latest version of the Walt Disney ident which is really modernised. The Ident is a continuous long shot which presents a journey from having no bright, vibrant colours to have many different types of colours across the screen showing a supernatural castle with fireworks coming from behind it. This gives the audience the understanding that the majority of films that are produced by Disney are going to have lots of colours and be supernatural (Toy Story) or have supernatural moments.
Creating an ident like this would require ability that is out of our reach at the moment but it does I've us inspiration in sub sections on what we can create (colours, lighting, background setting). |
|
This ident of the 'Warner Brothers' is very creative by also very simple. At first they show an old ident of the waves across the screen showing the top of buildings which merges and transforms into the latest creation of the ident. They are showing the development on where they came from to where they are now but still haven't lost that originality from when Warner was first created. Its been around 75 years since they started creation of Warner and by creating a more visual appealing ident also shows the progression. Even though the idea and the design of the ident has stayed the same you can see the slight change in colour from previous version to make it look more vibrant potentially due to the development in technology and the emergence of High Definition that has also developed or many generations.
This ident is really simple due to the amount of colours used and the design. Even though it may not be the most action packed ident like the Disney ident it is very clear and graphically high quality on who they are . Its simply a shield with 'WB' in it with 'Warner Bros. Pictures' in the middle of the shield. It may not give away what type of films they produce but maybe that is the whole point, not to give away much and you just have to wait and watch the film. The ever famous ident was created by Hal Geer who is a filmmaker and an american producer. |

'Universal Pictures' have definitely shown a great transformation of the way the technology has changed. This is through once have a pictured type earth to a visually real life looking earth with the typography at a much larger scale. The refined detail in this ident shows the quality of technology we now have by seeing the lights across some pats of the earth.
I really like this Ident because they don't use many colours but the lighting behind the earth brightens the whole ident with a like coloured grey for the text which is clean and visually very appealing. In all these idents you see movement from one area to another which does grab the audiences attention. Out of all three i think this is the best because they are symbolizing who they produce films for in a clear and effective way. Also i think they have the best graphics and special effects. |
|
This is the first 'Universal Pictures' ident created and i really like this one because of the old fashioned retro look. This is through the gold text going round the earth with the basic looking earth behind it. The quality of it is not great and wouldn't be appealing to an audience of this generation because normally everyone wants to see something that has lighting coming from various directions and having 3D graphics with the quality overall really high.
Looking at all three idents they all present movement in some way and have text that is really large and in the middle, They have a lot of light as well which brings through their detail. We know we wont be able to create something like that but it does give us great inspiration for what we want to try and do. |
Our Inspiration - Se7en Opening sequence
|
The Se7en opening sequence gave me and my group great inspiration and ideas for our opening sequence. We saw this and instantly knew we wanted to create a thriller opening sequence in the same type of style through the high key lighting and the mise en scene. We also watched other opening sequences that gave us ideas (red lights). The cinematography used is mostly close ups which means you can see the props in more detail and get a closer perspective of everything - using the razor on their finger. Seeing the razor used sends chill through the audience which makes them unsettled but can also grip them and that is what we want to achieve in our opening sequence .

Research about our genre - Crime Thriller
|
This research is about finding what to expect under the genre of a crime thriller film. This gives us the opportunity to establish what we are doing correct or doing wrong or even developing from what I've seen in this piece of research I've done.
The website is called ' Thriller studies'. When looking through this website i've seen various pieces of information in the 'codes' section that we have already considered using which shows we are on the correct track to make a great opening sequence. These particular things are: fast paced music, long shots and camera work. We were planning to use fast pace music throughout the majority of the opening sequence to create suspense. We were also possibly suggesting in adding slow paced music to cause confusion among the audience to keep them guessing on what this is about. |
Our Target Audience
Everything that is showcased through a TV, at a cinema, theater and many more have target audiences. Target audiences are the type of people the producers of that film, TV drama, series are attempting to attract and hold as viewers. This is so they could relate to the situation that they see in real life to what they are watching. In addition to this the target audience can be based on how that type of audience are seen to be interested in that area ( teenagers like where there is a lot of action, young children love to see cartoons, animations or where there is a lot of gunfire). We can say that this is a stereotype because it is not always true on what that group of people like but we find that it is factually true.
We are aiming our opening sequence towards an audience who love to be on the edge of their seat and get a rippling, cold feel down their back and exciting and thrilled by what they just watched. We want to our audience to have some acknowledgement of what is transpiring but also the sense of unknown. By making them feel slightly scared from watching the opening sequence it may be thought as a horror. However it won't have that extent feel scarce because we want people to be gripped and feel excited.
We are aiming this towards teenagers ( 16+) and adults. We have selected this age range because teenagers at this age will have a clear understanding of films of this nature due to them essentially being "young adults" who should be mature enough to watch and understand. Teenagers love to be gripped towards a film. If they are watching a film that has a long slow process of a build up they could loose interest and this could be reflected through opening sequence by having long takes and not much movement with possibly dull colours and typography and this is why teenagers will love movies under the genre thriller. Thrillers have exiting plots with sometimes a twist at the end which can leave a major cliffhanger. When you see the opening sequence of thriller movies (se7en) they are gripping and cause excitement due to having short takes and unusual camera angles and shadows which definitely entices a teenage audience.
Our target audience also branches out to adults. Adults the same as the teenagers in the way of them being mature enough to watch a film that has swearing in, emotional moments, serious relatable life event scenes and violent and graphic scenes.
As a group we will ask various questions to the audience who are in the barrier of our target audience to find out what they like and what they want to see in a thriller film and opening sequence. This information will be great to us because we could use it to produce an appealing opening sequence to our audience who will be gripped to it.

Our Survey
This is the information we have collected from our Survey which is great information on how to please our viewers and great a interesting opening sequence. This information will help us create the best possible opening sequence that will make our audience want to constantly replay.
Through the information we collected through our survey we found out that 60% of the people who took our survey liked the genre Crime thrillers more than mystery, science fiction thrillers and many more. The rest of the votes came from other and Psychological thrillers which both gained 20%.
With the question 'What would you expect in a thriller genre?' what received responses like 'Drama' , 'A lot of excitement, being gripped' also people said 'Fast action scenes, narrative with twist and turns'. Also people mentioned about jump scares and action and violence. This type of feedback is really helpful because now we are able to gauge that our audience want to be lead towards instantly to the opening sequence through many things. The main thing that all the responses lead to is having fast pace scenes because they would bring a dramatic effect and can bring suspense. We were planning to have fast pace scenes anyway but also slow pace scenes. this is to confuse the audience on what the pace of the film will be and can also show possibly a plot twist in the film which is what makes thriller films great.
When we asked what the audience though of us doing a crime thriller as an opening sequence most of it was positive apart from one comment where they said, ' If it was made well it would be good, but i'm not a fan of crime'. This give my group and I an incentive to make an opening sequence that will make this particular person change their opinion on crime thrillers or at least make them like it. The other responses we gained were mentioning that they would like to see a crime thriller that they would be clinched, have mystery and generally being interesting to watch. With the next question being about small hints among the opening sequence 80% wanted small hints and we were hoping that this would be the majority answer. This is so the audience will then understand the context of what is happening.
The choice of colouring is vital in the opening sequence and by asking the audience what colours they would expect to see we would have the knowledge to then apply some of these colours and also chose some other colours that we feel can appeal really well to the audience or even be the complete opposite to what they expect to confuse them but also engage them. The response we got were dark colours like black, blue, red and grey. We also felt that these colours present a thriller and are thinking of shooting scenes that have the majority of black and blue. We will also have bright colours to balance it out so there is mor of a range in what the audience can see.

YouGov
I need to know what to expect from my target audience and find out much more information that i wouldn't have expected that can help the production heavily. this website is called 'YouGov'.
YouGov is a useful website for us to analysis on what the age bracket, gender and many more aspects on what to expect from the people who watch films in the genre that we are choosing. You are able to see the region on the the UK they are from and what type of food they may eat and what you expect them as a character to be like ( could be selfish, quiet). For instance in this piece of data it came from the film 'inception' which is a thriller film. The age range is 25-39 years and the predominant gender watching Inception is Male most likely due to the film being action packed which men love to see. Even though women would have watched this they are seen (stereotypical) to watch films based on a story line that has emotion and feelings of great nature within it - Romantic film. Would you expect to see the information on what their political views are? Well i didn't but as you can see that is provided with the data showing that the viewers are mostly Left wing. We have also been able to see what films and tv dramas these people would most likely watch - Iron man, Matrix, Sherlock and many more.
How does this information help me and my group ?
Well we can gain an understanding on what the audience is like under the genre of thriller and be able to target our opening sequence to that group or near the age group depending on further research. I was surprised by the minimum age range because i thought i would be lower towards 20 years. This does show that the film has a lot of graphic violence but also has a story line that could be challenging to understand for someone who is younger or the process is longer even though there is action in the film.

From the information we found through YouGov we gathered the information that the audience of the film genre thriller really like films like Iron Man, the Matrix and many more. We also see that some of their favorite TV shows are Sherlock, Game Of Thrones and many more. Looking at just these we can tell the the audience like to watch things with discovery and to have things left on cliff hangers with suspense. Also they like to have a lot of action within their films so they are constantly gripped to the film.
After watching the opening sequence of 'The Iron man' and 'The Matrix' I saw them giving away what the film is about but not giving away on what may feature. In 'The Iron man' they showed computerized visuals of the creation of the iron man suit and various other constructions that relation to the uniform - the technical devices inbuilt into it. This gave the audience the chance to understand that the there will be a lot of technicality in the film in the way props have been made and the general action in the film. The way the action and the story line of the film has to be technically sound due to Marvel films in some way linking. This is why their audience numbers are always high because of the technical aspect brought in the film. The opening sequence for 'The Matrix is different to 'The Iron man'. This is because it doesn't give as much away to the audience but with their visuals it definitely grabs your attention. They show tones of numbers on the screen which is slowly zoomed into where it the goes into a number a the camera goes through a tunnel of numbers where we then come across the beginning of the film. You may think this is boring but by there only being two colours (green and Black) it shows a simply creation that has a lot of meaning behind it since they aren't giving much away which makes this opening sequence interesting to watch. In addition this opening sequence is that long so they don't have to provide any information.
We can see the construction of the iron man suit in the opening sequence throughout and some other equipment as well giving the audience the insight that there has been a lot of construction that the character had to go through in creating his costume.
There is only two colours we see in this opening sequence blacl and green apart from the end of it where they are beginig the film. This opening sequence doesnt giv as much away due to there only being numbers across the screen then going through a tunnel of numbers

This video is of us reading out what we are going to produce for our opening sequence and the reasoning behind certain parts and why we think it would be effective towards the audience.
Initial Story Board
Animated Story Board
We decided to create an animate storyboard so you would be able to clearly see what we want to shoot. In this we felt that the colours would make people understand properly on what we are planning to produce. Our initial story board is good but with an animated story board it looks much better and we can fully engage with it due to the colours and it shows our opening sequence at a better quality.
Location
Count down clock we are planning to use
We made sure that there would be no copyright issues throughout our opening sequence and the first hurdle came with the old movie countdown effect. We made sure when typing in that we added the word 'free' at the end. These were one of the first ones to come up and we thought it was the best suited for our opening sequence. We used a YouTube converter so we could convert the video to an MP4 so we could use it for our work.
We wanted to add this at the start because we felt it represented a thriller greatly due to the old rolling film with the countdown going down giving the audience the chance to prepare for the opening. We are planning to not have the countdown go down to one because we feel it creates a sense of scare and confusion since we typically see the countdown go all the way down. This can give an impression to the audience that the film is serious and can be dark. We decided to have the countdown cut out because we are creating an opening sequence of a crime thriller from the villains perspective making out that the villains is in control of the opening sequence on what you are seeing and how much you see.

Here are several screenshots from our opening sequence presenting the costume of Seif the victim in our opening sequence. The costume of a grey/white zip up hoodie, black tracksuits (slightly too small at the ankle) and a pair of clean bulky white shoes was worn by Seif to represent a lower / working class citizen through mise en scene due to the rough look and out growing the clothes. These clothes give an indication to the audience on what his status is in society and the white shoes does show he has earnt money to purchase something that he worked for and doesn't get the opportunity to spend money like this.
|
Max was provided with a casual black hoodie with a plain white mask. The hoodie can show in comparison to the victim that he is either at a working or middle class showing he is higher in society in comparison to Seif the victim. The mask is used to prevent us seeing his identity so we don't know who is behind all the people going missing and the killings . There was no need for a special costume for max since we are hiding any type of personality to the viewers so they have to keep on guessing.
Casting
Music ideas + final choices + Copyright
As a group we knew what avenue to go down and approach for the music we wanted to use for our opening sequence. We wanted slow paced music that adds creepiness to the opening sequence since it brings the aspect of a thriller forward because it makes you believe that there could be a sudden dramatic change in music also presenting a thriller theme. This slow paced music would probably be play by the instrument of a piano. In addition to having slow paced music we want to have a change in pace setting a tone for the rest of the film so having a upbeat tune will be perfect because its essentially a counter type to what we want our opening sequence to be - in the perspective of the killer. this brings excitement and unsettling to the audience. As a group we want to also have music that builds up tension to make the audience acknowledge what type of film it is and what they're about to watch.
As you can see just below we have chosen these three songs because we feel that they work perfectly with what we are producing. The intense building up gripping the audience, to the spine chilling piano music making the audience feel vulnerable and alienated. With this we then had a brief moment of upbeat music to then be stopped to cause confusion in the minds of the audience causing also a rough feel to the placement and sync of the music emulating to the vilian who has no remorse for his victims. we then went straight back to the piano playing to the end the opening sequence so the audience understand that the film is about to start and don't feel rushed into the beginning . But also this was done because upbeat music in a crime thriller seems to be on the detectives side but having the piano play once again after it, it implies that the vilian at this time is in control of everything . ' Come out and play' was our main piece of music to make the opening sequence flow and bring the daunting effect to the opening sequence . This music was the piano playing which i feel is really effective because it also connects the other two well since it is suttle. 'Murder of crow' is the upbeat piece of music you hear in the opening sequence. We used the end of that piece of music because that was were the upbeat feel was and this was perfect for what we were trying to cause for the audience - confusion. Finally 'Seeking the Truth' is the music you hear once the body is being dragged across the floor and with the credits and the wall with all the notes and pictures. The name coincides exactly with the music 'seeking'. When you place that word with music you would think of an intense feel and the build up to something that is about to happen. These compositions I feel work perfectly together due to the flow of the beat and sudden changes as well.
Overall i'am happy with the music chosen and believe it has worked really well for our opening sequence .
Copyright is really important and when using content that,s not yours its really important to make sure you are allowed to use it by either checking with the owner of the rights or checking the detail in the video to see if you are allowed to use it. Sometimes with certain things you are allowed to use it but you have to give credit to the person otherwise you will be flagged with a copyright strike. With the images underneath this specific track we had to make sure that we gave credit in our opening sequence to avoid any issues. We made sure for the search bar we had 'royalty' free at the end to make sure our chances of picking music that we aren't allowed to use are decreased.

Murder of Crow - Ben Hansen
Seeking the Truth - Ryoko
We chose three types of music to be our soundtrack and be apart of the opening sequence. It was originally two but we wanted to input another to gain a chilling feel in the sequence. We feel that these songs represent a thriller perfectly in the sense of the build up of tension and the piano playing adding a sense of evil but also happiness which can cause confusion and the presence of a oxymoron. To not get in any issues with copyright for this piece of music we have to give it credit in the description.

As I was looking at logos for some inspiration for my groups logo for 'innovative Productions' I felt that these are some great logos that are simple and really creative. I know I could have picked the more obvious logos but I wanted to look at different ones.

Innovative Productions Facebook Page
We decided to create a facebook page to promote our opening sequence. This is a great way in which to interact with our audience by being able to answer questions and upload things to the page to build up the excitement among the audience.
Ident
|
Creating an ident can be very challenging and a long process. It can be a long process because you need to think of what the background will consist of and if there will be a lot of movement. Also you have to consider the font of the text you will have and the transitions and animations.
For us we decided to look online on youtube to gain inspiration and to also figure out to us After Effects properly since with believed it was the best software we had available to create the ident. Youtube definitely did help because it made us understand that our ident has to be at a great quality in resolution and the idea of it otherwise it won't standout. Also it made us notice that sound is essential with the ident because it is the best way to get into a video by producing a spark that will capture the audience. After watching several videos of tutorials and selective idents, we then discussed on what our company name would be and we came up with 'Innovative Productions' |
Filmed, Produced & Edited by Jared Onyeka
An ident is meant to give an insight in what the company is about and what they produce and the name of the company gives away what they are also about as well.
I created this ident through Adobe After Effects. I wanted to make an ident that had a ridgid but also interesting ident that also had the sense of a thriller through the movement of the background visuals that looks a bit like constant striking lighting. This background was original footage i had from a RoundHouse event that my brother was performing at and i was amazed by the graphics and visuals presented. I didn't need to change anything about the background apart from adding a cloud effect which you can see slightly.
For the text 'Innovative Productions', I added a grain effect onto the text so it looks like rubble. This was since i felt that the original title which was black didn't suit the background so by changing this it fits into the puzzle perfectly. To make the title move into different positions and increase in its size i used keyframes. For the position of the text i just moved it into different positions for each keyframe. I basically done this for the size but done it at a later date in the ident so you get ac chance to recognise and take in the background. I also added a 'wiggle' effect and changed the speed to (7,70) so the actual title would shake. This Worked perfectly because the speed was not too fast or too slow.
Lastly I added a 'dissolve' transitions to the title at the end presenting that the film or the opening sequence is about to appear.
I created this with the title in my mind that we are creative and have new ideas and this is justified by the creation of this ident.

DAY 1 PRODUCTION
In Day one of the production of our opening sequence we focused on filming the scenes that are in the dark room where we would use various weird an unusual objects and pictures.
We felt that the first day was successful in filming and set the tone for the next couple of production days to be really good and at a high standard.

DAY 2 PRODUCTION
DAY 3 PRODUCTION
I decided to take pictures of the area where we filmed for day 3 of production so you get a closer look at everything that was put against the white background. Also you will see pictures of notes and some picture s that you either won't see properly or won't see at all in the opening sequence.
We decided to place various things on the wall so you get an understanding of what the villain is doing and who he has targeted.

Feedback
We were given a lot of positive feedback in our opening sequence on how clear it is on the showing the narrative and presenting a clear opening sequence. We were given positive feedback on the cut away used and the general fast paced editing throughout to signal what the pace of the film will be at. This is specifically seen at the moments of the notes on the wall.
We were given more positive feedback on the editing from the beginning of the opening sequence when we see a POV shot of the victim being dragged across the floor looking around with the black spaces being the actor suddenly gaining consciousness.

The critical feedback we got was that the framing was sometimes off in some areas and we found this to be when the victim was slouched in the chair and we will rectify this.

The ending with the killer turning his head to the side and then jumping up at the camera covering the lens was criticized to have not much meaning but also leaning over towards a horror. So we are going to change this to by filming a different scene with the killer picking up the mask instead.

How filming and editing has helped me with Producing our Opening Sequence
I feel that this video I filmed and edited really helped me produce our opening sequence. In this video i also used cut aways and short cuts that increase the intensity of the video .
I have a great passion for filming, editing and taking photos and hope to be part of the industry when i'm older an this video was really enjoyable to produce. The video shows the first T-Shirt my friend Zaki Kaleta designed and made and i decided to create a video of various shots while in London, New York and in Zakis home. I feel this video was a success due to the rough edge towards it and through the overlays in some areas ( specifically with the feet in shot). This video Definitely helped in the department of editing.
