Analysis + Feedback
For our preliminary task we decided to create an interesting and gripping scene to the viewer. Our plot was based around the exchange of money. The narrative was of one character he owes money to the other character. However the drop off of the money didn't plan out right with the receiver getting less money than he first thought which you can see through his reaction. By leaving the 50 second video on a cliff hanger with the case slamming shut it creates suspense and eagerness among the audience to know what happens next and what the character will do. Through editing we made our narrative continuous and clear so the audience have a good understanding of the whole concept. I feel it went really well and we really considered what type of cinematography and dialogue used and music during filming and post production.
We used props and certain came angles, movement and techniques to create a sense of reality and a specific perception at those moments in time. We used a tracking shot, shot reverse shot, match on action and an over the shoulder shot. We felt that these shots would be effective in our narrative. We had to consider the framing in shots so we could see the whole body of a character or certain body parts of the character to create tension and suspense. In addition we needed to consider the 180 degree rule which we wanted to use to create an effect which we done. You see this as the character comes through the door and the camera tracks the character by going behind them while following them and reaching the other side of them with an over the shoulder shot.
After getting feedback there are elements for improvement but there are areas where it has been a great success. We tried to make our sequence engaging through specific sounds, editing and camera angles and movement which was a success. We saw proof of the cinematography working well through the match on action shot With the scene of the character opening the box we can see the tripod in the background. With the environment we were in, we had some restrictions which faulted one of ours scenes. This is where the actor which was standing up didn't have enough headroom at the over the shoulder shot. To improve these situations, we should have watched back the recording carefully to see if there were any anomalies, but also before shooting we should have checked in the framing so our opening sequence looks proffesional. A positive note was when one of the characters hands shaking on the desk it emphasises him being nervous at that time which adds dramatic tension. This effective shot and production can keep the audience gripped to find out what will occur. To improve our sequence and keep the dramatic tension we should remove the fade after seeing the trembling hands. After the character leaves the room we used dietetic sound which worked perfectly Listening to our feedback we found that the CU reaction shot of the character seeing what was inside the case was really effective but we could have used a POV shot which could have brought a different perspective for the audience on who they should support in the sequence. In addition the ending scene could have been shortened as it seems the duration is too long.
